Conservative gress roots sickened by McCain speech; conservative elites still silent

Ron L. writes:

McCain’s speech went down like a burial at sea over at Free Republic.

53 percent were sickened and only 20 percent felt more likely to vote for him.

See Free Republic’s poll on the speech. No wonder Powerline, Commentary, National Review et al. have had nothing to say about the speech after two days. No way they can plausibly stick lipstick on this pig.

Here’s a theory (subject to change based on further facts): the establicons’ silence on the speech shows that the number one thing for them is not Iraq, but the Republican party. Meaning that they will swallow McCain’s move to liberal internationalism on Iraq. Republican solidarity, Republican victory, Republican continuation in power trumps all.
