The McCainites’ dilemma

Last evening Powerline posted four entries and so far this morning they’ve posted five, yet still nothing on John McCain’s foreign policy speech yesterday on which Rush Limbaugh provided detailed and pointed commentary yesterday afternoon. The Powerline writers have got to be seriously bent out of shape about the speech. If on reflection they truly cannot square McCain’s new internationalist line on foreign policy with a firm commitment to stay in Iraq until we “win” (translation, to stay in Iraq forever), then what would be the basis of their continued support for McCain? That he won’t defer to international opinion on foreign policy as much as the Democrats would? That he won’t appoint Supreme Court justices as liberal as those the Democrats would appoint? That he won’t push open borders as much as the Democrats would? (Whoops, scratch that.) That he won’t welcome the growth of Islam in America as much as the Democrats would? (Whoops, scratch that.) That he won’t stick it to conservatives as much as the Democrats would? (Whoops, scratch that.)

McCain has put his conservative supporters in a tough, tough spot.

And what about Commentary? For Commentary, as can be seen from John Podhoretz’s lead article in the March issue, Iraq is not just the most important thing, it’s the only thing. They must be devastated.
