Profile of Obama’s mother

The things I’ve read so far about Ann Dunham Obama Soetoro, the late mother of Barack Obama, have left her a frustratingly vague figure. Janny Scott writing in the New York Times helps fill out the picture a bit. “Ms. Soetoro,” as Scott refers to her in the Times’ formal, politically correct style which is so ill-suited to the woman being portrayed, definitely seems like an idealist and adventurer, not an anti-American leftist as some have characterized her. Also she seems like the source of the niceness that is the hallmark of her son. Nevertheless, the Times’ profiile is still frustratingly vague.
