A VFR election poll

(Update: As of midday Wednesday, the poll, which began Monday, has had 100 responses. the poll will stay open until Wednesday midnight.)

Given the ongoing liberal drift of the Republican party, many people on the right believe that we should not support any of the current Republican candidates who have a chance to win the nomination. Others believe that a Democratic presidency would be so ruinous that we must elect a Republican no matter what. Others are somewhere in between.

To try to sort out the situation, below is a poll of presidential preferences. The main question, Number 2, is somewhat challenging. It presents ten possible match-ups in the 2008 election and asks you to choose how you would vote in each case. If you would like to participate, copy the questions into an e-mail, type the answer after each question, and send to me, with “Presidential poll” in the subject line.

Presidential Poll

1. At present which candidate, if any, do you support for the Republican nomination?

2. Based on your current views, how would you vote in the ten possible general election races listed below? The answer can be one of the two candidates listed, or “None,” or some independent or write-in candidate of your choice. (Note: From the point of view of this questionnaire, not voting is the same as voting for a third-party candidate, since the main purpose is to find out if VFR readers would vote for the Republican or not vote for the Republican. However, adding the name of an independent candidate that you would prefer if you won’t vote for the Republican helps complete the picture.) To simplify the questionnaire, I’ve only included names of Republicans who have at some point been considered top tier or who have actually won a state caucus or primary.
