Henry Hyde, R.I.P.

Henry Hyde, Republican of Illinois, who retired from Congress at the end of 2006, passed away last night at age 83.

How ironic that Hyde, who nine years ago as chairman of the House Judiciary Committee led the way to the impeachment of President Clinton for lying under oath and obstruction of justice, and then led the courageous and principled but doomed effort by the House Managers to persuade the Senate to convict him, should die just as Clinton is re-starting his career as America’s biggest liar on the way to getting his wife elected to the presidency.
