Two important immigration reform bills

A reader writes:

Two major bills have been submitted to Congress to outlaw birthright citizenship (H.R. 1940) and limit chain migration. Note however that Rep. Ron Paul has not cosponsored either bill.

Rep. Nathan Deal has submitted a bill to outlaw birthright citizenship for children of illegals. Here is a list of the 90 cosponsors sans Rep. Paul.

H.R.1940 Title: To amend section 301 of the Immigration and Nationality Act to clarify those classes of individuals born in the United States who are nationals and citizens of the United States at birth. Sponsor: Rep Deal, Nathan [GA-9] (introduced 4/19/2007) Cosponsors (90) Latest Major Action: 5/4/2007 Referred to House subcommittee. Status: Referred to the Subcommittee on Immigration, Citizenship, Refugees, Border Security, and International Law.

Phil Gingrey has submitted a bill to end chain migration and effectively repeal the immigraiton act of 1965. Guess whose name is conspicuously absent as a cosponsor?

H.R.938 Title: To amend the Immigration and Nationality Act to make changes related to family-sponsored immigrants and to reduce the number of such immigrants. Sponsor: Rep Gingrey, Phil [GA-11] (introduced 2/8/2007) Cosponsors (28) Latest Major Action: 3/1/2007 Referred to House subcommittee. Status: Referred to the Subcommittee on Immigration, Citizenship, Refugees, Border Security, and International Law.

Clearly Rep. Paul’s refusal to to cosponsor these bills not only demonstrates his lack of support for them during a possible future Paul presidency, but is hampering their progress in the present Congress. When he told Peter Brimelow he was not interested in cutting legal immigration or chain migration he really meant it. For the record, Rep. Tancredo has cosponsored both while Rep. Hunter who is also running for President has cosponsored H.R. 1940 the bill to eliminate anchor baby citizenship.
