Great idea! Let’s support a man for president who will ruthlessly defeat … us!

The other day, reader Alex K. said that Rudolph Giuliani’s “passion for immigration, combined with his toughness and resolve and willingness to be combative,” makes him our most dangerous opponent on that issue.

I was reminded of that astute comment when glancing at a letter to the editor in an old issue (May 21) of The American Conservative. The correspondent, J.H. Cohen of New York City, wrote:

You correctly identify Giuliani as “ruthless,” and that is exactly what we need both to win this war abroad and to defeat its lily-livered critics at home.

Cohen is telling the readers of a Buchananite, immigration-restrictionist magazine, that a President Giuliani will “ruthlessly” push the things he believes in and “defeat” those who stand in his way. But, since one of the things Giuliani believes in most strongly is wide-open immigration, including illegal immigration, that means Giuliani will ruthlessly push open borders and seek to crush all those who oppose him on that issue, namely, us.

Similarly, since Giuliani wants to turn the Republican party into a socially liberal party, that means Giuliani will ruthlessly push social liberalism and seek to crush all those who oppose him on that issue, namely, us. Thanks, J.H. Cohen, for being so frank about your candidate’s intentions, should he become president.

By the way, can you think of any time in American history when a candidate’s election as president was urged on the grounds that he was ruthless ? What—are we headed toward Bonapartism?
