If you dish it out, you’ve got to take it

For years I’ve been irreverently referring to Norman Podhoretz as “Pope Norman,” and the “pope of the neocons.” What I meant by that was that Podhoretz is constantly issuing these fully-argued, encyclical-length statements about what’s right and what’s wrong, what’s acceptable and unacceptable. Since I also tend to write fully-argued statements about what’s right and what’s wrong, what’s acceptable and unacceptable (though they’re not often of encyclical length), I can’t complain when a European blogger jokingly calls me “The Pope of American Conservatism.”

Seriously, it’s hard to imagine how one could be the Pontifex Maximus of American conservatism and be persona non grata in American conservatism at the same time.
