John Wayne

I have mixed feelings about John Wayne. In many of his movies, I feel he’s mediocre, walking through the part, using the same familiar affectations. In some of his movies, I feel he’s very good. And in some of his movies, I feel he’s one of the great stars of Hollywood. Spencer Warren is less ambivalent about Wayne and more admiring. In honor of Wayne’s 100th birthday, here is an appreciation of Wayne’s work that Mr. Warren has written at the website of the American Conservative Union.

The article has a surprising detail. John Ford, the director most closely associated with Wayne’s career, held it against Wayne that he had failed to serve in the military during World War II.
