The evil thing gets eviler

Two years ago the EU attempted to turn itself into a sovereign transnational state by means of a constitution which required ratification by the peoples of the respective European states, but which was defeated by the voters of France and Netherlands. In response to that setback, the EU has sought to achieve the same result by means of a “treaty” that does not require popular approval. The treaty is identical in substance to the constitution. According to Melanie Phillips, the treaty creates a foreign minister for the EU, called a “High Representative,” who would declare foreign policy for all of Europe which the member states must support “actively and unreservedly.” The treaty also creates a European police force and public prosecutor that (as I understand it) can arrest and punish individuals for violation of EU laws. Control of foreign relations, and the ability to use police power on individuals—that is sovereignty, period. If the treaty is signed, the peoples of Europe will have without their consent lost their national independence to a continent sized, unfree government.

Like Bush’s Comprehensive Black Death Act, the EU treaty is substantively horrible, and is being pushed through by sneaky and illegitimate means, being unable to survive normal scrutiny.

Will the peoples of Europe resist this totalitarian coup? Have their socialist, controlled, nanny-state societies left any spirit in them?
