McCarthy on the democracy folly

In a critical response to an article on Iraq by former Sen. Bob Kerrey at Opinion Journal, Andrew McCarthy at National Review Online argues for the position that VFR has advanced for the last five years. Suppressing jihadists and building democracy in Muslim lands are two different things. Building democracy requires permanent occupation—and, given the nature of Islam, is not doable in any case. Suppressing jihadists so that they cannot threaten us does not require occupation, and is doable.

The tragic, horrible folly of President Bush and the neocons is that they conflated these two very different objects. Why did they do this? Because their highest belief, their belief that rules all others, is not national defense and national survival, but universal democracy.
