Bush’s Forward Strategy … for Sharia

Allan Wall writes:

And this is what we’re fighting for? That Muslim militias can demand jizya from Iraqi Christians?

LA replies:

Expecting the Muslims NOT to do that is like expecting birds not to sing in the springtime. The only thing that could stop them from doing that would be if they came under a superior power that excludes Islamic law from the public sphere, such as existed under Saddam Hussein, or under Ataturk. For an outside power to do this would require imposing absolute rule on the country which we will never have the will to do. Therefore we do not have the ability to reform Muslim societies.

Mr. Wall replies:

Ironically, Iraq is actually more Islamic now than it was before the invasion. In 2005, during the constitutional deliberations, one of the factions didn’t want Islamic law in the constitution , but our own U.S. ambassador (a Muslim himself) encouraged them to accept it.

Maybe Operation Iraqi Freedom should be renamed Operation Iraqi Sharia.

LA:

Whooowh.
