Imagine

Wouldn’t it be amazing if the Democrats, out of their hatred for Bush and their opposition to the war in Iraq and all its consequences, took a stand as a party against admitting any Iraqi refugees?

My Lennon-in-reverse reverie did not last long. Alex K. writes:

Did they do that after Vietnam? At any rate, I don’t see any way it happens—the fact of refugees would be a big black eye for Bush and his dream of a functioning free Iraq. Emphasizing our responsibility to the refugees is a great way to harp on the war’s failure. Plus I’ve already heard Democrats talking about how immigrants always help America so of course we should let em in.

And then there’s an even more disturbing possibility. Instead of the usual thought that the supporters of the government and the Coalition, who are mainly Shia, would be fleeing for their lives from the Sunnis and wanting to come here when the U.S. withdraws, a reader, who had opposed the invasion from the start, just sent this truly freaky suggestion:

Perfect irony: all Sunnis including banned Baathists and Saddam’s army will be eligible for U.S. political asylum when Shiites take complete control.
