Spencer sticks his toe in the forbidden waters

Just six days ago I wrote:

But let’s hope that I’m wrong [when I said that Robert Spencer does not really believe in immigration restriction]. Also, it’s possible that Spencer may be hoping for someone else to take that tough position, so that he himself wouldn’t have to do so. I suspect that many “conservatives” are like that. They want the problem taken care of, without THEIR having to do it. When I remember the spiritual changes I had to go through in my life before I felt comfortable publicly criticizing non-Western immigration, I can understand the depth of people’s fears and inhibitions in this area.

Today, February 5, commenting about rising tensions between Sunnis and Shi’ites in Dearborn, Michigan, Spencer wrote at Jihad Watch:

Sunni/Shi’ite Jihad coming soon to a city near you. Doesn’t it occur to anyone who reads stories like this that it might not be a good idea to import this problem? Maybe immigration policies need a review? Or is the fog that grips Washington just too thick for that?

Let us recall that Spencer has never made a case for the reduction or cessation of Muslim immigration as such. True, in response to my criticisms of him, he has claimed to have done so, but in reality he has limited himself to calling for the screening out of certifiable jihad supporters while letting other Muslims continue to enter America and become citizens in the same numbers as at present. He has also told people that it is too soon to broach the subject of immigration reduction because there is no political support for it at this time. Yet, having never advocated a reduction of Muslim immigration, he complains that other people have not advocated a reduction of Muslim immigration. As I said, Spencer, like more than a few conservatives, is secretly hoping that someone else will take the difficult and painful stand that he himself has so far not been willing to take.

Here’s hoping that America’s foremost Islam critic will stop waiting for other people to take the plunge into logical consistency on the Islam problem and do so himself.
