The weirdly churched versus the Christian divorced

A female correspondent sent me a piece by Jack Wheeler (not available online without subscription) about Barak Hussein Obama’s unusual religious background. Not only was his African father, who abandoned him at age two, a Muslim; not only was his Indonesian stepfather, who actually raised him, a Muslim (Barak’s white American mother was an atheist); but young Barak went to a madrassa in Indonesia when he was a young child, which Wheeler says makes him a Muslim, and, therefore, since he is now a Christian, an apostate who under Muslim law should be killed. Wheeler has some ideas about how Barak’s background can be used to bring out certain things about Islam.

My correspondent said:

Gosh, this is the year of presidential aspirants with screwy religious backgrounds. Another plus for the Dragon Lady? I hope not.

I replied:

As for the weirdly religious, we have a Mormon, and a former Muslim.

As for the more normally churched, we have:

A Catholic who’s been married three times, having publicly trashed his second wife in the act of breaking up their marriage while he was mayor of New York;

A Protestant who’s been married three times, having unceremonioiusly dumped his first and his second wife in turn;

And another Protestant who’s been married twice, having unceremoniously dumped his first wife who had waited for him while he was a prisoner of war in Hanoi for seven years.

Meanwhile the Mormon and the former Muslim have only been married one time each.

Offhand, the only candidate I can think of who is both normally churched and has been married only once is … HER.

- end of initial entry -

A correspondent points out that Edwards is normally churched and once-married.
