Homosexual civil unions have been approved by Mexico City’s municipal government.

What, in machismo-obsessed Mexico, a country where, a few decades ago, a man could not even wear shorts in public?

This is genuinely surprising news, as distinct from the news two days ago (which many conservatives were surprised at) that President Bush is rushing to join with Democrats to pass his open borders bill.

Don’t forget that Spain bought into homosexual unions either earlier this year or last year. Mexico is the biggest country in Latin America, and likes to think of itself as sophisticated and culturally advanced. There are a lot of things out there bubbling “under the radar” in Latin America that don’t get any attention in the US mainstream media.

Also note that the City of Mexico has a lot of autonomy, and the Mayor of that place thus can do some things other municipalities cannot. It will be interesting to see how this plays out, because the Mexican Congress may not see eye to eye with the City government on this issue. We could see a Mexican version of the Gavin Newsome farce, for example.

Remember the candidate for the Presidency of Mexico who refused to accept the election results for a while earlier this year, even threatening “direct action” in the streets? He was, and maybe still is, Mayor of Mexico City. The international Left has long been a feature of the Mexican political scene. Recall Frida Kahlo, Stalinist, has been an icon of Mexican artists for a couple of generations.

Don’t confuse modern Mexico with some image from movies of days gone by. The elites down there are just as keen on destroying the inconvenient parts of Western civilization as those in chic Upper West side Manhattan condominiums.

Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador had to resign his mayoralty to run for office. N is correct. The PRD is very anti-clerical, even anti-Catholic. They also support other things, like abortion-on-demand and euthanasia.
