Anti-American immigration rally in Washington on C-SPAN

David G. writes:

For the past twenty minutes I have been sitting in front of my television, absolutely aghast, watching C-Span 2 broadcast an Immigration Rally that was held today on the Mall in Washington D.C. This program will be rebroadcast at 12:55 am EST. I am literally nauseous after viewing this abhorrent spectacle. Here is what I watched and bear in mind I saw only twenty minutes, or so:

* a crowd carrying posters of Che

* the ubiquitous Mexican flag, plenty of American flags

* many others carrying posters that read Justice and Dignity for all Immigrants

* a sign that read, in part, Stop Deportation and Segregation Now

* Rosa Rozales, from LULAC, giving an impassioned speech to the throng entirely in Spanish

*Gustave Torres, from yet another Latino organization, giving an impassioned speech entirely in Spanish

* An African woman speaking barely audible English decrying being separated from her children and the unfairness if immigration laws. Her speech was translated into Spanish over the loudspeakers.

* Adul Kamus from the African Resource Center saying something about opportunity and unity. His words immediately translated into Spanish over the loudspeakers.

* Imam Johari Abdul-Malik talking about unity among immigrants. His words, yes, translated….

* A long closing prayer of sorts…in Spanish.

Through what little I watched I did not detect a single note of gratitude in their voices, nor any sense of shame over the fact that what they are unable to do in their own countries, they do here without fear of reprisal. Granted, I don’t speak Spanish but these folks were addressing their people and their people were there to demand their rights from a country that is withholding them. I hope you get a chance to watch, or tape, the rebroadcast of this travesty.
