Podhoretz “disappears” Islam

I haven’t read Pope Norman Podhoretz’s latest big (11,500 words) article, “Is the Bush Doctrine Dead?” though, given the recent move of various Bush supporters to the exits, as discussed at VFR, the subject is certainly timely. We may safely presume that the battle-scarred warrior pope wearily but with stout heart dons his rusty armor yet once again and assures us that the Bush doctrine is alive and well. Cued by a reader, I have ascertained that the unmodified words “Islam” and “Islamic” do not appear once in Podhoretz’s article (except in the name of the organization Islamic Jihad), but only “Islamist” and “Islamofascist.” The word “Muslim” appears just three times in the article, in the phrases “Muslim world” and the “Arab/Muslim world.” There is thus no mention of Muslims. I guess it’s easy to imagine that the democratization of the Muslim world is a going proposition, when you leave Muslims and Islam out of the picture.

By the way, has it occurred to anyone that until the death of John Paul II in April 2005, we had two neocon popes at the same time?
