Iraq revisited again

For people new to VFR, I recommend this lively thread from November 2004. It starts with my approvingly citing an article written Patrick Buchanan in Fall 2002 in which he warned about a terror war in the wake of the coming U.S. occupation of Iraq:

Once in Baghdad, how do we get out? … To destroy Saddam’s weapons, to democratize, defend and hold Iraq together, U.S. troops will be tied down for decades. Yet, terrorist attacks in liberated Iraq seem as certain as in liberated Afghanistan. For a militant Islam that holds in thrall scores of millions of true believers will never accept George Bush dictating the destiny of the Islamic world.

I then went on to say that if Buchanan and his fellow anti-war conservatives had kept pushing serious and important points such as these that related to the objective pros and cons of invading Iraq, instead of focusing all their energies on a mindless hate campaign against President Bush and the neoconservatives, this country might have had a useful debate about the war before the war.
