How Bush can recover

Here is a reader’s practical advice to President Bush on how he could both recover his political fortunes and help America:

The GOP faces serious problems in ‘06. It is almost a certainty that the Dems are going to win big next November, possibly winning back both houses of Congress. Bush will be thus further weakened and unable to push through his “agenda,” even if the GOP loses only the Senate. Already, some conservative Congressmen are telling Bush not to visit their districts next year. I foresee an even greater split in the GOP, with the party losing thousands more conservatives to smaller Independent parties in large part because of the Administration’s refusal to shut down the Invasion and deport all illegal aliens.

In my estimation, Bush has only one choice to win back some who have left the GOP—and that is to get behind a serious policy to protect America from illegal immigration. This would include: 1) a military crackdown on the Southern Border, 2) the construction of a dual fence there, 3) the expedited removal of all illegal aliens from within the country, and 4) telling the Justice Dept. to start going after businesses that hire illegals. He needs to demonstrate that he has been negligent and wrongheaded in his open borders policy and that he truly wants to fulfill the obligation of his office—to protect the United States from foreign invasion. Whether he can actually bring himself to that kind of “humility” and to call the invasion “the Invasion from Mexico,” I seriously doubt. But if he wants to be effective and not a completely lame duck the rest of his term, he needs to do something dramatic. I don’t think there would be anything more dramatic than to admit he has erred and FINALLY to call a spade, a spade—to state that we are being invaded AND that he is stopping it cold.
