Allan Wall on us in Iraq

I love the ending of Allan Wall’s latest article from Iraq:

As an American soldier in Iraq, I would like to be part of a successful mission. As a citizen, I recognize the challenges we face here.

Now, the Iraqi National Question is our question.

God help us all.

Allan neatly brings together the contradictory aspects of the whole American affair in Iraq. As a soldier he wants the mission there to succeed. But what is the mission to which he and the rest of our forces have been assigned? Not the defense of the United States, but the building of a Muslim country. Instead of attending to our own very troubled National Question, we have gotten hopelessly mired in Iraq’s.
