Miers couldn’t even convince her own advisors she was competent

Another reason President Bush finally withdrew Miers: it wasn’t just that she was doing poorly in her meetings with senators; she was doing poorly in her own “murder board” sessions with her helpers and advisors with whom she was practicing for her appearance before the Judiciary Committee. According to the Washingon Post (thanks to Captain’s Quarters):

Her uncertain, underwhelming responses left her confirmation managers so disturbed they decided not to open up the sessions to the friendly outside lawyers they usually invite to participate in prepping key nominees.

As Ed Morrissey sums the initial decision to nominate her: “Bush liked her, and no one bothered to check her out properly.” So much for Bush’s famed instincts.
