Not dead-enders

In my comments about President Bush’s speech yesterday, I failed to credit him for an important step he made toward the truth. In contrast to his administration’s long-time, unthinking line that the terrorists in Iraq are nothing more than “dead-enders” and “nihilists” who “hate freedom,” he acknowledged that they are in fact people with a coherent ideology and agenda. But merely seeing that our enemies have an agenda is not sufficient. Until Bush recognizes that this agenda is not merely some extremist offshoot of Islam but is part of Islam and fully consistent with what Islam has been from the beginning, he will still be evading the only truth that matters.
