Frum’s threat to stop supporting Bush was just rhetoric

While continuing his strong opposition to the Miers nomination, David Frum also says: “I have been and remain a supporter of this administration and this president.” But just a week ago, Frum wrote: “All this year, the president has been testing the limits of his support. Well we are at the limit now, and anything less than a superb choice for the O’Connor vacancy will overstep it.” About which I commented: “I doubt that Frum seriously means that he will stop supporting Bush if the nominee is less than superb.”

So what did Frum mean by saying that a less than superb nomination by President Bush would “overstep” the limits of his support? Simply that Frum would not support that particular nomination? Gosh, what a threat. No wonder Bush is so terrified of doing anything that will offend conservatives.
