NRO awakening?

More hopeful signs of critical thought breaking into the ranks of the pro-Bush right. At The Corner, Andrew McCarthy has had it with Bush’s leadership that has resulted in our conquering Iraq in order to help them set up a sharia constitution that will breed more militants. Richard Lowry says that compromise with sharia comes with the territory (!), and McCarthy replies effectively to that. However, McCarthy ends on the note that as long as Islam is not officially enshrined in the constitution, so that Muslims merely practice their Islam “privately,” that should be ok with us. Someone needs to point out to McCarthy, as I discussed here yesterday, that Iraq had such a secular constitution in the 1930s, and it never took root because it went against the deep nature of Iraqi society. My point is that, while official sharia is obviously worse from our point of view than a secular constitution, and makes a hash out of Bush’s democratization policy, a secular constitution is no solution either. We therefore should not waste our energies and our soldier’s lives engineering the internal politics of Muslim countries, but should instead attend to our own national security.
