Falwell congratulates Roberts for …

In response to my blog entry on conservatives’ disgraceful support for John Roberts, a respected paleoconservative writes the following, which even I find hard to believe:

Your comments are entirely on target. A few days ago I was shocked to watch Jerry Falwell on MSNBC congratulating Roberts for fighting for “equal rights for gays” in representing the homosexual activists in Romer v. Evans. Even that neocon effete wimp Tucker Carlson couldn’t believe his ears and had the former Fundamentalist turned W doormat repeat what he had said.

I said to my correspondent: “Unbelievable. You’re sure Falwell said this?” He replied:

Several times. He said: “Although as a Christian I don’t approve of homosexuality, as an American I approve of what Judge Roberts did to insure their equal rights.” Of course the discussion is not about equal rights but, as Carlson fumblingly noted, about the citizens of Colorado being prevented from voting to include in their constitution a prohibition against special rights for gays.

Another reader writes:

I saw that Tucker Carlson program with Jerry Falwell. That’s what happened. As far back as 1988, GWB was the Bush family’s contact with the “Religous Right.” He has been cultivating them ever since. All GWB ever has to do is make a few speeches mentioning Jesus and invite them to the White House, plus some very lukewarm criticism of abortion.

Yet another reader writes:

Believe it; I too saw Falwell say as much. He said gays should have the same rights to housing and employment as all other citizens. No one has a right to housing and employment. That’s a positive right. The only rights we have are negative: to life, liberty, and property.
