Conservative rebels roll over for their master

Re Gonzales, conservative activist Paul Weyrich is quoted in the Washington Times retreating from the tough anti-Bush talk of the other day. “If Mr. Gonzales is nominated, I will neither support nor oppose him. I can’t support him because of my constituency, and I can’t oppose him because I can’t hurt this presidency…”

Come on Weyrich, oppose Gonzales, and not just because of pressure from your “constituency,” but because it’s your right and your absolute duty to do so. Bush said many times as candidate and president that he was committed to pick Supreme Court judges with views of the Constitution similar to those of Scalia and Thomas, and now he’s evidently leaning toward nominating his little protegé Alberto G, who has none of Scalia’s and Thomas’s Constitutional formation. If you are unwilling to take a stand on this, then what are you in politics for? Are the weekly meetings Bush arranges for you with White House staff so fulfilling to your sense of amour propre that they serve as a substitute for having a conservative president? Don’t answer.
