A glimpse of a return to national sovereignty in Europe

This cheering observation comes from John Thornhill and Raphael Minder in the Financial Times:

A month ago, Mr Chirac warned his compatriots that they would become the “black sheep” of Europe if they voted No to the EU’s constitutional treaty. But voters ignored his advice and turned Mr Chirac into the black sheep of France.

We should pause to savor the lovely symmetry, the poetic justice of this reversal. Contrary to what the arrogant Eurotots (European totalitarians) thought, it’s not “Europe” that is calling the shots for its member nations; for once, it’s the nations of Europe that are calling the shots—for themselves.
