Democracy: equally despised by Islamists and Eurocrats

In 1992, Ali Belhadj, a leader of the Islamic Salvation Front in Algeria, declared: “When we are in power, there will be no more elections because God will be ruling.”

Now if we eliminated God from this picture, Ali Belhadj’s political philosophy would seem to be identical to that of the secular leftist elites of the European Union. For years, but especially since the thundering rejection of the EU constitution by the people of France and the Netherlands, the Eurocrats have undisguisedly conveyed the message: “When we are in power, there will be no more (real) elections, because we will be ruling.”
