Another attempt to write God out of the Pledge

A Denver middle school had an Orwellian moment this week. During the student body’s recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance, the school official leading the Pledge over the intercom (which, by the way, seems like a very strange way to conduct the Pledge of Allegiance) changed the words “one nation, under God,” to “one nation, under your belief system.” After pupils’ and parents’ shocked complaints, the school apologized and said the official had been acting on her own. But really, wasn’t she just responding to the message that has been pouring incessantly from every media outlet in their coverage of the new pope, namely that religion remains a threat to society so long as it’s too “rigid” and “dogmatic”?

Let’s face it. God is a problem for modern liberal society.
