Worse than boilerplate

Concerning the comment by Mark Steyn that Bush is just mouthing empty pleasantries when he praises the European Union, a reader writes:

I hope that Steyn is right. If he is, it’s nothing more than boilerplate writ large, obnoxious as that is…

To which I replied:

Even if Steyn is right, it’s worse than boilerplate. What would we say of a president who went to the Soviet Union and profusively praised Communism, and whose supporters then told us that, well, he really didn’t mean it, it’s just words to smooth things over?
