Kagan and Kristol on the election

Here are Kristol and Kagan celebrating the Iraqi election and other developments such as the renewed Israel-Palestinian “peace process.” This article is a mine of neocon thinking on these issues. I’m struck most of all by their enthusiasm over the ruinous and delusionary “peace process,” which in its most recent evolution has involved, among other things, the “right-wing” Sharon turning into Shimon Peres and the “realist” Condoleezza Rice informing the Israelis that Gaza and the West Bank must be “contiguous.” I thought neocons were supposed to be more hard-nosed and pro-Israel. In fact, some neocons actually view the “peace process,” not from the point of view of Israel’s security, but from the point of view of “spreading democracy.” The idea that neoconservatives have any particular solicitude for the state Israel is becoming increasingly old-hat; for today’s neocons, Israel is just another obstacle in the path of global democratization.
