Putting down the northern secession

If the blue states secede, what should the red states do? Subdue them with superior military might, says Mackubin Owens at NRO. And when the fighting is over, he counsels, leave out that business about malice toward none and proceed straight toward radical reconstruction.

Thanks for showing us that article, Mr. Auster. Actually, if you surf around on the net, you’ll find a lot of liberal blogs discussing this stuff. Of course, if blue states are insane enough to try, I say let them go ahead. They’ll quickly realize the truth in Mr. Owens’ article.

Such an idea of militarily prohibiting a number of states from seceding is profoundly un-American. Secession was recognized not only as a right but the duty of a people who have found themselves under a government that they no longer find just.

Uh oh are we gonna re-fight the civil war here _again_? Trust me, save yourselves the pain and just scroll through all the old articles and comments.

I say let them have at it. The secession of Northern states would be the perfect catalyst for the South to rise again. Then, when the secession is put down like a rabid dog, maybe we can get back to the America which was intended, and again we’ll start naming our schools after American heros rather than Latin American revolutionaries or obscure African chiefs.

Good point, van Wijk. But you won’t do it with this president. Here’s how he introduced Condi Rice today:

“As a girl in the segregated South, Dr. Rice saw the promise of America
violated by racial discrimination and by the violence that comes from hate.
But she was taught by her mother, Angelina, and her father, the Reverend
John Rice, that human dignity is the gift of God, and that the ideals of
America would overcome oppression. That early wisdom has guided her through
life, and that truth has guided our nation to a better day.”

Does Shrub realize who brought him to the dance?

I wonder if Mr. Owens would feel the same way if a European country decided to secede from the EU.
Or, for that matter, if we tried to pull out of the UN and they sent troops to invade the US.

I am not particularly enamored of centralists like Mr. Owens. That said, being a - whatever color Peroutka was-er in a blue state (I’m a Maine resident, although I basically live in New Hampshire (UNH grad student)), I don’t relish the idea of the Northern states seceding and forming ultra-liberal governments.

Guys, I thought that Owens’s article was meant in a humorous and satirical spirit. That was my intention in posting it.

Posted by: Lawrence Auster on November 16, 2004 10:44 PM

Agreed. And I for one don’t think blue staters insane enough to try it.

Did anyone else follow Owens’s link to Jay Nordlinger’s column which included a story of a man swimming to freedom from China to Macau 25 years ago? I was disappointed… the story would have been much juicier had it happened a dozen years earlier— when Macau was Antonio Salazar’s.

If (or when?) any serious splits occur in this country, I believe it will be along racial lines, and probably such as to render State borders mere lines on historic maps.

I would add that the whole question is moot anyway. The Left basically controls the machinery of power in this country; they’re not going to secede from themselves.

It was the red States that were trying to “secede” from the liberal order by reelecting a man they thought to be a conservative. But it didn’t work—they elected a liberal anyway.

Given that the left wants to re-make everyone in their image, the “blues” are not actually going to secede from the “reds”, because that would be admitting liberalism’s failure…

Yes, but before you can wage jihad, you must first withdraw from Mecca (where you have no power at the moment) to Medina (which you can control and use as a base for jihad operations).
