Overeating now a disease, to be paid for by the taxpayer

Obesity can now be treated as a disease under Medicare, with no distinction between obesity resulting from a glandular disorder and obesity resulting from overeating. Years ago I was debating with some left-wing relatives of mine who believed in national health insurance. Trying to find out how far they wanted to take this idea, I said to them: “Let’s say a woman is overweight and that this harms her career opportunities. Should the government pay for her to have a personal trainer?” While they didn’t answer the question directly, it was clear from the whole conversation that there was no inherent limit to the demands they were placing on government to take care of people’s needs and equalize all their opportunities.

And now my rhetorical illustration, which seemed absurdly extreme at the time, has come true.
