Lott backs Limbaugh on black quarterbacks claim

Rush Limbaugh is correct about black quarterbacks being overpraised, says John Lott in The Washington Times. Lott had a team of researchers compare the newspaper coverage of quarterbacks over a four week period, factoring in how well each team and quarterback was doing, and found that “[b]lack quarterbacks’ news coverage is 27 percentage points more positive than whites.”

This is in regard to Rush Limbaugh being fired from his ESPN gig. I have followed pro football since the 1960s, though I somewhat outgrew it several years ago. The idea of black quarterbacks has long been a preoccupation of liberal sportswriters. Howard Cosell was very open about this. This ties in with the liberal idea of “no racial differences.”

I was a fan of the LA Rams of the 1970s. Carroll Rosenbloom, late owner of the LA Rams, was a political liberal and friend of the Kennedys. After Al Davis, Carroll Rosenbloom had the most influence over his team of any owner. Rosenbloom went out of his way to give a black QB a chance. When Colts owner, he wasted a high draft choice on a black QB who couldn’t play. On becoming Rams owner in 1972, he gave a black QB a full shot in preseason, to no avail.

Former Grambling QB James Harris was released by the Buffalo Bills in 1972 and waived through the league. Harris got a job with the OEO in the Nixon Administration. Rosenbloom contacted Harris and signed him. Harris backed up John Hadl in 1973. When Hadl’s arm went bad in 1974, he was unloaded to Green Bay for multiple draft choices. Harris was given the starting job.

James Harris could do pretty well with good protection. He had a slow release and a fatal flaw for a quarterback. Harris was prone to big errors in big games. This happened in the 1974 and 1975 NFC title games. In 1976, Harris had two bad games on Monday Night Football, making mistake after mistake.

The Rams had a great defense and could win with a good mechanical QB who didn’t make mistakes, which Harris wasn’t unfortunately. Harris was benched for Pat Haden in mid-season 1976. The LA black press went into a frenzy, accusing Rosenbloom and the Rams organization of “racism.”

Rosenbloom, being a good liberal, had gone overboard to give a black QB a chance. When the QB failed and had to be replaced, Rosenbloom and his team were vilified. In a way, a parable of modern society.
