Democrats’ double standards on immigrants, sex

Arnold Schwarzenegger’s candidacy for the California governorship has Democrats contradicting themselves all over the place. Michael Kinsley writes that Arnold Schwarzenegger’s sexual exploits as recounted in his 1977 Oui magazine interview were “disgusting.” Andrew Sullivan retorts that while “someone who takes a culturally conservative view of sex” might well view the behavior in that way, how can a good libertarian-liberal like Kinsley? Precisely so. There is absolutely nothing in Kinsley’s liberal philosophy that would make a consensual gang-bang “disgusting.” This is a pure instance of the double standard.

Even worse, California Governor Gray Davis, who thinks illegal aliens ought to be able to obtain California driver’s licences, and has just signed a bill to that effect, doesn’t think a legal immigrant and naturalized U.S. citizen who has lived in the U.S. for a quarter century and speaks English with an accent should be governor. Speaking to a supporter Saturday, Davis said about Schwarzenegger, “You shouldn’t be governor when you can’t pronounce the name of the state.” In the face of such an outrageous comment, descriptions such as “double standard” or even “effrontery” seem inadequate. A better choice might be the Jewish word chutzpah, defined as unmitigated, brazen arrogance.

What a joke. Gray Davis says Arnold Schwarzenegger is unfit to be governor because he can’t “properly” pronounce the word California.

That comes from the man who has reduced the rule of law in his state to doormat status.

Gray Davis is about as odious a political creature as one can imagine.
