British opinion supports war

A new poll for the Times of London reveals that 56 percent of the British public support the war, with 36 percent opposed. This reverses the position before the war, when a similar poll showed only 36 percent backing military action and 57 percent opposed. As long as America and Britain begged for the approval of the rest of the world before they proceeded, they were hostage to their own opponents. But when they took the initiative and led, people followed. There is no substitute for leadership.

Here’s a further British poll, from The Guardian, showing the dramatic increase in opinion favoring the war.

And here’s an item on the 19 point shift of opinion in Blair’s favor since the war began. This article also reflects on the differences between the public debate in Britain, where the House of Commons has debated the war continuously, and in the U.S., where Congress hasn’t discussed the issue in months, and the Academy Awards ceremony had more discussion of the war than the U.S. Senate.

Here is a good opinion piece on why the polls are showing a dramatic increase in support for the war from the British people. It is also one of the most moving calls to patriotism I have read in a long time.
