Our romantic illusions about Turkey

In light of the pope’s visit to Turkey and the ongoing debate over its admittance into the EU, worth re-reading is Serge Trifkovic’s article from 2003 (excerpted from his book The Sword of the Prophet) warning us about our dangerous lack of realism vis à vis that country. Turkey’s secularism is superficial and held in place by the Kemalist military, and true democratization would re-Islamicize the country overnight.
