Cannibals aren’t funny any more
More cannibalism in the news: UK channel 4 to show artist eating dead baby. While some people are complaining, no publicly recognized principle is being violated. After all, cannibalism is a victimless crime in this instance. Further, we’re told by reputable authorities that unborn children have no moral worth, animals and human beings are not morally distinct, and in any case babies are industrial products to be genetically engineered and cloned. So why not eat a baby if it’s stillborn? What the program shows is that the distinction between the human and the non-human is being abolished. That’s troublesome, because once the distinction is gone it’s not clear why one should stop short at the inhuman. In the last century human beings were sometimes treated as waste to be disposed of. Sentimentality and squeamishness may camouflage the fact, but it looks as if the stage is being set for much broader application of the same principle.

This story is shocking beyond words. It’s the sort of story I can’t even tell my wife about because to even pronounce the words to describe it is to shame oneself and feel as if one is shaming and soiling the person one is telling it to. I just don’t know what to say about this, apart from I hope someone somewhere will make the moral criminals who are doing this and the ones who are making money showing it on TV understand that limits are beginning to be breached which are there for everybody’s protection and beyond which is a moral no-man’s land which is entered at everyone’s mortal peril, the perpetrators as much as the innocent bystanders. We’ve seen this kind of thing before — we saw it in the last century. Need more be said? We are simply now seeing some of the more radical consequences that were warned about back at the beginning of the process. Trust me. There’s a long way to go yet before the beast is sated. Barring some unforeseen circumstance, things are going to get much, much worse before they get any better.
