Disappearing African physicists

Say what you like about the New York Times, their science coverage isn’t bad, at least as long as it’s not one of Natalie Angier’s chirpy little pieces. Every now and then they even have group photographs of particle physicists and such. When looking at such pictures I’ve always wondered why no one challenges the scientific community and the Times about the evident decision to exclude from consideration the views of women and persons of African origin on ultimate physical reality. Apparently others had the same thought and tried to do something about it, but ran into a glass ceiling or something along the way: African physicists fail to show up at Edinburgh conference.
