The Incredible Shrinking President

Never did I expect to agree with anything said by arch leftist journalist Alexander Cockburn. But after the wildly veering, out-of-touch-with-reality statements and actions over the last few months by the man Cockburn calls The Incredible Shrinking President, I share the fear Cockburn speaks of:

“The leader of the World, Free and Unfree, simply isn’t up to par. He’s not qualified for the job. He never was. And that means big trouble ahead for the World, Free and Unfree. At least Nixon knew what he was doing, which is why the world was frightened by him. When it’s not laughing at him the world is frightened of George W. Bush because it knows he hasn’t a clue. That’s truly frightening.”

For some reason I feel to need to defend Bush somehow… but I just can’t. A few months ago I might have said that the administration is crazy like a fox, but right now…. They seem to have been preparing the American public for something big, but what?

The draft hasn’t been called or anything even close to being that disruptive. And you don’t talk about attacking a country for months and expect that the enemy will be surprised. Maybe some things are being done very quietly—but we see everything else. Probably even the wacko conspiracy theorists are confused.

Are they waiting for a big attack (or some other sign? the election?) or is al Qaeda not really a threat? And if they are why isn’t the National Guard patrolling our borders?
